LIME in the Cayman Islands has donated free high-speed internet to an after-school programme.
It is no surprise that we think the internet is a crucial part of any student’s education. What might be a surprise is that we’re on our way to providing every young person on Cayman with free internet access.
We’ve already set up free internet services in all the local libraries and schools, plus several hotspots around the island. More recently, though, we’ve connected a very special afterschool programme.
Positive Intervention Now is for primary age students with academic and social challenges. They meet three afternoons a week for sessions on school subjects, the arts, etiquette and spiritual development, led by volunteers from the church and the community. We’ve provided a high-speed broadband service for study and keeping in touch with friends around the world.
“We’re grateful for this internet access for our students,” says Pat Bynoe-Clarke, the programme’s board chairperson. “They’re now able to research the topics we discuss in the programme.”
LIME established the service to show students the power of the internet as a food for learning. Many don’t have access to the World Wide Web at home and we want them to experience it.
