Cable & Wireless Panama (CWP), our business in Panama, is the market leader in mobile, broadband and fixed line services in Panama. CWP is also a leading regional player in enterprise and managed services as well as being a leader in carrier services in partnership with our Caribbean business.

Our mobile business operates under the brand name +Movil. We are the market leader in a competitive mobile market and have developed a market leading brand with superior network coverage and excellent customer service.

Our broadband business, called Cable & Wireless Internet has the highest share in a lowly penetrated market. In September 2009, we had 127,000 broadband customers in a total population of approximately 3.4 million. In fixed line, CWP is the largest operator in the country with 418,000 customers (September 2009), a position of significant strategic advantage.

CWP has also entered the pay-TV market in 2009 with a comprehensive subscription service, branded +TV Digital. +TV Digital is the country’s only 100% digital TV service. +TV has allowed us to offer customers competitive ‘bundled’ offers including ‘double play’ (TV and broadband), ‘triple play’ (TV, broadband and fixed line) or ‘quadruple play’ (TV, broadband, fixed line and mobile) packages.

CWP also provides enterprise and managed services to larger corporate customers and Governments. One such managed service contract is the telecom platform for emergency services (ambulances) we provide to the Panamanian Government. Our 911 phone service has substantially helped the Panamanian community.

Panama is a geographic hub of the Latin American region and is experiencing rapid economic growth. In 2009, Panama achieved an estimated GDP growth rate of 1.8%, in contrast to the economic recessions suffered in many other countries. In 2008, Panama reported official GDP growth of 9.2%.

It is also a regional hub for telecommunications traffic between North and South America, placing CWP at the centre of one of the world’s busiest telecom traffic routes.

Cable & Wireless first launched its operation in Panama in 1997 after acquiring a 49% stake in the then state owned telecoms company, INTEL.  We continue to partner with the Panamanian Government which owns 49% of the business with the remaining 2% stake held by an employee trust.

In 2009 and 2010 Cable & Wireless Panamá won the Gallup Great Workplace Award. This recognition is an important accomplishment that distinguishes us with other Panamanian employers. We have added our name to an exclusive list of companies that have demonstrated an extraordinary ability to create commitment within their work environment in order to complement their excellent performance levels.

In addition to its everyday business CWP are all also committed and focused in ensuring we give back to the community through the CWP foundation. For example since 2003 the CWP foundation has implemented Internet classrooms in schools, public and community centres located in poor areas benefiting over 150.000 people.
