Our Monaco & Islands business incorporates Monaco and a host of island nations.

The portfolio is managed though four ‘cluster’ operations:

• Monaco Telecom (MT)
• Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Bermuda (CIIMB)
• Indian Ocean (IO)
• South Atlantic and Diego Garcia (SADG)

It has a presence in 22 markets in total. It is a portfolio business which offers a variety of services such fixed line, mobile, broadband and television within the group. We are the market leader in each territory for the majority of services.

As at September 2009 the Monaco & Islands subsidiaries had 159,000 mobile customers, 217,000 fixed line customers and 34,000 broadband customers. Its joint venture businesses had 3.7 million mobile customers, 47,000 fixed line customers and 14,000 broadband customers as at September 2009.

Monaco Telecom

Monaco Telecom is the leading telecoms provider in the Principality for mobile, broadband and fixed line. It also offers a TV service to customers. MT also has an international business, Monaco Telecom International (MTI), which invests in and provides services to telecoms businesses in developing markets. MTI provide managed telecommunications services to PTK, a telecommunications operator in Kosovo. Among other investments MTI holds a 36.75% stake in Roshan, a mobile phone operator in Afghanistan, and a 65% stake in Connecteo, a high-speed broadband service in West Africa (covering Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Guinea, Niger and Senegal). MTI also owns 99.9% of Divona Algerie, a telecommunications operator providing broadband services in Algeria.

Channel Islands, Isle of Man & Bermuda

In the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, MT provides mobile services under the brand Sure. In Guernsey, we also provide fixed-line and broadband services, in both of which we lead the market. Our Channel Islands businesses have capitalised on demand for data centre and hosting services from enterprise customers, particularly in the financial and gaming sectors.

In Bermuda, we provide international telecoms services, which have benefited from the island’s position as a financial services centre.

Indian Ocean 

Our Indian Ocean clusters include operations in the Maldives and Seychelles Islands.

Dhiraagu, our business in the Maldives, is the leading full service operator in the country. We have operated in the Maldives since 1975, as a partner of the Maldives Government. In 2009, we increased our ownership of the business to majority control, allowing us to consolidate it as a subsidiary. Dhiraagu is the market leader in mobile, broadband and fixed line services with exclusivity over fixed line and broadband. Following the increase in our holding, we now control 52% with the Government of the Maldives, holding a 48% interest. 

Our business in the Seychelles, Cable & Wireless Seychelles, is the market leader in fixed line, mobile and broadband services. Cable & Wireless Seychelles is wholly-owned subsidiary, and has a 110 year history with Cable & Wireless.

South Atlantic & Diego Garcia

Our South Atlantic business has operations in the Falkland Islands, Ascension Island and St Helena. We also operate on the island of Diego Garcia, also a UK overseas territory. We are the sole provider of telecoms in each of these markets.
